We have become a world of instant gratification and it should not be a part of any self defense program!
With social media 60 second clips trying to teach the viewer how to defend themselves against a weapon, grab, choke is a joke!
Yes, you can learn a quick self defense technique on social media I’m not arguing that. However, a person who is serious about LEARNING
how to defend yourself should enroll in a reputable program with qualified instructors who teach a reality based approach based on experience
not a 60 second clip.
We have become grabbers of what is easy. Click a link watch a video become proficient. How about dedicating yourself to learn and practice?
We search for a self defense class or martial arts school and pick the closest one without doing any research on the program offered and the
qualifications on the instructor(s). Why? Because it’s convenient. It’s easy.
I drive an hour one way 3 days a week to train with a truly qualified instructor to enhance my self defense. That’s a total of 3 hours of my time 3 times a week to learn from one of the best instructors in the state if not the region. I could drive 10 minutes to train in the same style of self defense but I did my research on the convenient location and was not impressed with the program or the instructor.
My time is precious. I can’t afford to give up that much time. Yep, I get it. I had kids involved in other sports and martial arts and its a hard schedule. I get it but we’re talking about learning how to defend yourself or your child is learning how to defend themself not playing some other sport. You decided you wanted to LEARN how to defend yourself. That’s great! Just don’t think that you’re going to learn and be proficient off TikTok or YouTube. Invest your time in researching martial arts schools within a 15 mile radius from home to start with. If they offer a 1 or 2 class free trial – keep looking. You are not going to learn what type of instructor your working with in 2 30 minute classes. If 15 miles does not give you what you need move out to a 20 mile radius.
I offer 6 weeks of classes as an introduction to me, my staff and the vibe of my school. It gives both you and me an opportunity to work with each other and see if I’m a good fit for you and if you are a good fit in my school. Yes, I do turn people away from becoming students of mine. Maybe not the best business decision but I’m not in this business to just make money I want to help people LEARN how to defend themselves and if I don’t think a person fits into my program I’m very honest as to the why and try to help them find another school that they may want to try.
Please understand most martial arts schools have great intentions and want to help but most are drive thru schools passing out belts. Yes they may have a fun program and yes everyone is happy. Great. Just do some research first before enrolling. Sometimes you might find a great school just down the street. But please, look around and ask qualifying questions before investing your time and your money.
Saving your life takes more than Instant Gratification!!
Anyone is welcome to reach out to me and ask me what I think you should be asking. I love talking about self defense!
